Established in 1995 Freedom Air was originally formed by Mount Cook
Airlines as South Pacific Air Charters in response to the new breed of
low cost carriers in the trans Tasman region. It eventually became
Freedom Air and fully owned by Air New Zealand. Freedom Air is a
low-cost commercial carrier based in Auckland, New Zealand. It flies
scheduled services from New Zealand to Australia and Fiji to cities
such as Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Sydney and Nadi, as well as
domestic chartered services within New Zealand to Christchurch,
Dunedin, Hamilton, Palmerston North and Wellington. Its main base is
Auckland International Airport.
Fleet
Freedom Air began with a single Boeing 757 aircraft at the start of
operations on 8 December 1995 and by 2004, had grown to include five
Boeing 737-300 aircraft. In mid 2005 Freedom Air ordered the delivery
of the first of four new Airbus A320-232 aircraft being leased from
parent group Air New Zealand to replace the current four Boeing 737-300
in service. The A320s will operate between Christchurch, Dunedin,
Hamilton and Wellington to destinations including Fiji and the Gold
Coast.
In Flight
Part of the reason Freedom Air is able to provide the cheapest tickets
is the cancellation of complimentary in flight services such as meals
and entertainment. All passengers are welcome to bring on board their
own reading material, game handsets, snacks or toys for children. This
however does not mean there are none of these things on board. All of
these services are available at a small price. On sale for kids are
Kids Activity Packs and playing cards. For passengers who will be
travelling on the Airbus A320, there are DVD players available for
hire, double or single set of headphones, and a movie of your choice.
The positive effect of not having complimentary meals given out to all
passengers is that it has allowed the luxury of choice on board Freedom

packs, cookies, muesli bars, muffins, to pasta snacks and chips at very
